What is anxiety?
Anxiety can affect us from time to time, it tends to be limited and related to a stressful situation or event, characterized by a feeling of apprehension, nervousness, or fear. However anxiety can become a problem if it is interfering with a person’s ability to carry out, or take pleasure in everyday life.
Symptoms of anxiety can be unsettling, your heart rate increases, your mind races and you can no longer think straight. Though everyone experiences anxiety a bit differently, there are some more common symptoms to look out for. Physical sensations such as a racing heart, hot flushes, sweating and skin clamminess, rapid breathing; and/or frequent gastrointestinal upsets. Emotional sensations can be feelings of excess worry, panic, fear or guilt, obsessive thinking and behaviours; and/or feeling generally tense and wound up. Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia. On average, 1 in 4 people – 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men – will experience anxiety.1

How to manage anxiety
There are a variety of treatments available for anxiety. One effective way of managing anxiety is mindfulness. Mindfulness helps the person to see their thoughts without immediately reacting and to be present and aware of their symptoms without judging them. This helps the person to become less overwhelmed and more able to engage with their day to day life. My 5 tips you can put in practice when you feel anxious
- Be Mindful - Observe your thoughts, be present and witness them as just thoughts. This allows you to disengage and see the situation or challenge more clearly. Remember you can pick and choose the thoughts you wish to give more energy and focus on.
- Savour the Moment - Identify 4 things you can see in the space you’re in right now- 2 things you can imagine that bring joy to you. This helps guide your attention away from your troubling thoughts and takes your focus to the present moment.
- Grounding - Go outside barefoot and stand or walk on some grass or earth. Research shows this allows the positive charge that tends to accumulate in our bodies to be normalised by the earth’s negative electrons.
- Flower essences - By working on your vibration they help to change consistent negative thought or feelings to a more positive vibration in the body; whilst being very gentle and effective with no side effects.
- Essential Oils - In an oil burner or diffuser use Sweet Orange and Geranium to lift your mood.
